A Letter to Barnstable County Voters
Dear Barnstable County Voter,
Thank you for taking the time to learn about my campaign and me. I invite you to return for event updates.
My name is Sheila Lyons. I am a current member of the Assembly of Delegates, representing Wellfleet, and a candidate for Commissioner of the Barnstable County Commission.
I, like many of you, had an “idea” of what the regional county government does. However, it was not until I became an active delegate did I have come to appreciate the impact the Commission and its many departments has on Barnstable County. I have had the opportunity to meet many dedicated Commission staff whose work positively impacts our county. I have also witnessed repeated instances where poor communication and lack of leadership from the Commissioners has resulted in missed opportunities.
I believe it is time for a fresh perspective and new leadership. Barnstable County is at a critical juncture with many economic, environmental, and human service issues before us. These problems will require new levels of collaboration and in some instances a coordinated regional approach. I differ with some of my opponents in this race, including the incumbent, who have stated the Commissioners should be available to help when and only approached by the Towns.
I believe that the County Commissioners should engage and lead the dialogue of how to balance regional issues while maintaining the uniqueness and sovereignty of our towns. How we choose to solve our current challenges will define us for generations.
I do not profess to have all the answers but I do promise to be fully committed to the job. I will ask all the questions, bring all stakeholders to the table and have an open dialogue with all 15 towns as we plan for our future.
There are two seats open for Commissioner this year. I am asking for one of your votes, first in the State Primary on Sept 16 and again in November.
